Pot Holder for Someone You Love

This is an easy project for someone just starting to sew.

-Cut 2 pieces of fabric 6" x 6"
-Cut 2 pieces of fusible batting 6" x 6" (or use a product like insul-bright insulated lining)
-Cut on the bias a strip 25" x 1.75"
-Cut on the bias a strip 6" x 1.75"

-Iron the bias strips in 1/2 and then fold the edges in toward the fold in the middle, iron
-Iron the fusible batting to the fabric squares

 - Close up of the bias tape

You could use store bought bias tape, but I wanted to teach my students how to make bias tape.

 - Trace a heart onto each of the fabric squares using a Mark Be Gone marker or something similar

 - My students are always asking to use the special stitches on the machine, so I thought this would be an ideal time to play with this.

 - Baste the two squares together around the outer edge

 - Sew the folded edges of the 6" piece of bias tape together.

 - Fold that piece of bias tape in half to make a loop, baste the raw ends together.

- Attach the loop to one of the corners of the square.

- Open up the long piece of bias tape and pin the edge to the edge of the square.  Starting at the corner with the loop sew along the fold of the bias tape.

 - Fold the bias tape over the raw edge of the square and attach it on the other side of the square.

Ta-da ...  Now lets bake some Valentines cookies!

Here are some pot holders  that 2 of my students completed today.
